It is a new year which means a new opportunity to start planning and thinking about things you want to accomplish in your life, business, with your family, your health and more. But do you ever find yourself just “thinking” about a good idea you want to do but you NEVER actually do it? Knowing what to do is never enough.

It’s not as simple as “Just do it.” If it were that simple, we would all have everything done we want to do.  There’s something really foundational that has to happen before we can take action, and that is that we must learn to conquer our own feelings.

I recently discovered the 5-second rule by Mel Robbins. It is an easy but awesome concept. Mel Robbins discovered this principle in a crazy hard time of her life. Every night she would lie in bed thinking (not sleeping) of all the things she needed to do. Then when the morning came, her alarm would go off but she found she could NOT get out of bed. She would think, “What the heck is wrong with me? I know what I’m supposed to be doing, why can’t I just do it?”

She discovered that she had to launch herself into a state of action. Literally. So when the alarm would go off in the morning she started a launch countdown sequence by counting down from 5 to 1 and then she just launched herself out of bed. And incredibly enough it worked. It is as easy as 5-4-3-2-1 GO!

The science behind counting backward is all about metacognition. It is basically distracting your brain (counting backward from 5-1 really distracts you) from sabotaging yourself. It takes you out of autopilot mode where you hit the metaphorical snooze button all throughout your day.

So the next time you find yourself wanting to do something remarkable for your life, family, health, or business; or maybe it is something less remarkable like folding laundry or cleaning the kitchen;  but find that you are in the perpetual “snooze mode” I want you to give it a try. Literally launch yourself into doing that great thing by counting down backward from 5-4-3-2-1 GO! and then just get up and go do it.
